"Life is Suffering"

This is supposedly the first of Buddha's four Noble Truths. Although, from the .05 seconds of Google research I just did, the true implication behind these truths isn't that all of life is about suffering, but more that there is suffering in life, and that through the practice of meditation, suffering can be alleviated. If any hard-core Buddhists are reading, please feel free to elucidate further.

So, I nearly got one of my little toesies broken at a rehearsal yesterday on Baker Beach. See pic at left, the purple one is the one that's in need of some meditative energy, fast!

This experience has been a challenge, on a million different levels!!!!!

Last weekend we had an "Artists' Retreat" day at a beautiful secluded beach in Half Moon Bay. As a surprise, the theatre company folks lugged our set down this steep cliff and it was all set up when we arrived-- it was done to show us all how cool the set looked on the beach. It's a little hard to see here, but those are screens, a big old armchair, a grandfather clock and a bamboo ladder in the middle.

One of the biggest creative challenges that I'm having is that the character I'm playing is very emotionally shut down, and I'm finding it difficult to get into it. It's a pretty depressing role, really. At the very end he has a kind of awakening.... I feel like it's about as unglittery a role as I could possibly have to play.

The two Baker Beach mini-performances are next weekend, and then the run at the Magic Theater is a week after that.

I am using a very intense, powerful affirmation to get through it all.

OUCH! That toe looks painful. Can't believe it but the floor you took the picture of the foot on is in my kitchen! Love the screens on the beach.

Having busted my all of my toes on at least one occasion, I can say there isn't much to be done for them but to grin and bear it. If it's REALLY bothering you, a little cotton wool between the broken one and the one on it's left, then tie them together with adhesive tape (after first reducing the fracture and correcting any misalignment therefrom). It will take 4 to 6 weeks to heal. Pain pretty much dissipates after three weeks. Use aspirin or acetominophen to reduce the pain and swelling. Try to keep it elevated the first day or so, soak in cold water and drink lots of booze to take your mind off that pain (psychic pain is so much more fun to play with). If it shows signs of infection (shooting streaks up the foot to the leg, explosive edema, excruciatingly hot and red to the touch despite cold water soaks) then see a doc for some antibiotics and possible surgery.

Keep the faith and pass the bourbon, boy.

Take care of that toe. I know how painful that can be. Good luck with this production. The part sounds challenging and possibly even a little frightening on the personal level. Glitter is so much more you, but exploring this type of role could be a real growth experience. Keep up the affirmations and get out of character quickly when your work time is over. Take care, dahlin'.

Whoops! Missed the beach performance while in SoCal. You got a nice write-up of your Baker Beach appearance in today's "Bay Guardian" theater listings under the "Opening" section. They even called you a "sharp ensemble" and printed all six of your names. Way to go, starlet.
